World Backup Day: March 31st!

March 31st is World Backup Day, bringing together businesses across the world to discuss the importance of backing up data and having a secure infrastructure.

Ingrained into World Backup Day is the acknowledgment that businesses of all shapes and sizes are under threat, eventually, ransomware or malware of some nature will get through the firewalls and damage data stored in presumed airtight systems.

“The only way in which organisations can withstand the threat of ransomware is by investing in disaster recovery solutions,” said Manikandan Thangaraj, Vice President at ManageEngine. “Disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) has been on the rise for the past few years and its market size is predicted to reach USD 41.26 billion by 2030. The winner of the battle between the backup service providers and threat actors who leverage ransomware will be determined by how quickly DRaaS providers can react to potential new threats.

“When it comes to data backup and recovery, using a Zero Trust strategy will boost your data security because you’ll be authenticating both the user and the device initiating the backup.”

Zero Trust strategies and re-enforced data protection are becoming a must-have in the evolving digital age, in 2022, it was found that 80% of companies have not put into place systems to back up their data.

“Backup systems need to be redundant AND diverse. It does not help to have three copies of your data using the same cloud providers. Use different technologies like on-premise, off-site/offline and cloud technologies,” added Dr Johannes Ullrich, Dean of Research at SANS Technology Institute.

Businesses are starting to pay attention the importance of backing up their data, but more variety and enhanced unified systems are going to become a necessity moving forward.
