Microsoft users can remove passwords

Microsoft is now enabling its users to completely remove passwords from their Microsoft accounts and allow them to sign in to the company’s services using alternative authentication methods instead.

“Passwords are highly susceptible to malicious attacks, as people simply reuse them across accounts or utilise simplistic formulas for creating new passwords,” notes the tech giant. “These are relatively easy to guess for hackers who can utilise password spray attacks and phishing to gain access to vulnerable accounts.”

Although Microsoft users can choose to continue working with passwords if they wish, over the next few weeks they will also have the option to change how they access secure services. This may include authentication via Windows Hello, security keys, verification codes or using the Microsoft Authenticator app.
