Kuwait installs smart traffic cameras

Kuwait has announced it has installed smart traffic cameras in a bid to boost road safety.

The new cameras are able to detect mobile phone useage from drivers, record illegal turns, recognise when drivers and passengers are not wearing seatbelts, and identify speed limit and traffic light violations.

In a statement to Kuna, Lieut. Gen. Tawheed Al-Kandari said that the introduction of the state-of-the-art, high-sensitivity cameras will help to reduce accidents that lead to loss of lives and material losses.

Experts hope that not only will the sixth-generation cameras help to enhance traffic safety but that it will also act as a deterrent for motorists against breaking the law.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Interior the total amount of traffic violations between January 2022 and November 2022 was 3.4 million. During the same periods there were 170 fatal accidents, with lack of attention by drivers being the primary cause.
